The moon
Well he obviously wasn't aware of the presence of moon-letters and probably never thought to hold it up against the moon. I mean, who would? Elrond is more knowledgeable and perhaps had experience with these. I would say that Thorin is less observant and knowledgeable.
When Elrond read the moon letters on Thorin's map, Bilbo and the dwarves learned important details about the secret entrance to the Lonely Mountain. The letters revealed that the door could only be opened at sunset on Durin's Day when the last light of the setting sun would shine upon the keyhole. This knowledge was crucial for their quest to reclaim their homeland from Smaug the dragon. It highlighted the significance of timing and the importance of ancient lore in their journey.
There were moon runes in the map. The could only be read by moonlight, and it could be only the moon in the same phase or same night. The runes told how to find the keyhole to the secret passage.
Moon Runes are the hidden text on Thorin's ancient dwarven map.
The map was very old and showed a secret passageway to the mountain.
