Born José Antonio Domínguez Bandera (born August 10, 1960), better known as Antonio Banderas, is a Spanish film actor, director, producer and singer. He began his acting career at age 19 with a series of films by director Pedro Almodóvar and then appeared in high-profile Hollywood films including Assassins, Evita, Interview with the Vampire, Philadelphia, Desperado, The Mask of Zorro, Spy Kids and the Shrek sequels. Two of his best films are Desperado, followed by it's sequel Once Upon A Time In Mexico, with Johnny Depp, both written and directed by Robert Rodriguez. In the beginning of his American film career he could not speak English, but he learned quickly.

He is not Muslim nor a follower of Islam, although he portrayed the character Ahmed ibn Fadlan, a court poet to the Caliph of Baghdad, in the film 13th Warrior based on the novel Eaters of the Dead by Michael Crichton, itself a retelling of the epic poem Beowulf. He is an officer (mayordomo de trono) of a Roman Catholic religious brotherhood in Málaga and travels, with his wife and daughter, during Holy Week to take part in the processions,however in an interview once he did described himself as agnostic.
