Answer Geoff Perret can think & writeGeoffrey Perret is one of the top historians working today. He started out as a chronicler of American social/political history with books covering the 20's, 30's, 40's and 50's, but his practical military background and intellectual curiosity next led him to pursue broad military topics in thought provoking ways. His classic early book is "A country made by war" which describes how at key moments the US has redefined itself when faced with military demands. He then wrote esteemed one volume histories of the US Army in WWII (There's a War to be Won" and the evolution of the US air force in "winged Victory". He then moved on to create readable award winning one volume biographies of military presidents and political generals (Grant, Eisenhower, MacArthur, Kennedy (and the greatest unsung military leader - Lincoln. The Iraqi morass proved to be the underpinning of his recent book on the National Security Council and national Command in war time. Perret was born and educated in the US of English entertainer parents. he lives in England with his wife and travels often to the US and world wide to research his books. He volunteered for the US army after high school and subsequently got his BA in international relations at the University of Southern California, and then studied law at Berkeley and did further graduate work at Harvard. His early works are listed under Perrett with two ts. For many years he was a Random House author under the superb guidance of that great American editor Robert Loomis.
