Some of Robert Gould Shaw's accomplishments were to defeat the Confederacy in the battle of Fort Wagner, another one was to win the Civil War, and to end slavery for good.
Well those weren't really his accomplishment's. he died trying so he did help but the attack on Fort Wagner failed and Shaw died but his regiment did help a lot like winning battles against the Confederacy and setting them even further back.
Robert Gould Shaw was an American military officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He commanded the all-black 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, which entered the war in 1863. He was important in the civil war because he was the first commander to a regiment of black men.
Robert Gould Shaw's parents were Francis George Shaw and Sarah Blake Shaw. He was partly educated at boarding schools in Europe . He briefly attended Harvard University but quit in 1857 to work in a New York City counting house. He studied in Europe before attending Harvard University from 1856 to 1859.He was unsure about his studies and his life before he went to fight in the civil war. When the civil war began in 1861, he joined the Union .
The federal government granted Massachusetts Governor John Andrew permission to raise a regiment of free blacks to fight alongside the white regiments of the Union army. After taking part in the Battle of Cedar Mountain on August 9, 1862, Shaw was promoted to captain and got to command 1,000 black men. Shaw saw that his men got paid less than the white soldiers. He sent letters of protest to the Army leadership and Congress and encouraged his men to refuse their pay altogether until equality in pay was granted, which Congress ultimately did, with back pay.
In Georgia he was ordered to burn the homes of Southern civilians but refused to carry out the order, saying that even if this was intended to make him the instrument of God's revenge, he didn't want to be any part of it.
Robert Gould Shaw was killed by a shot through the heart on July 18, 1863 during the battle of Fort Wagner, while he was leading the attack by his regiment from the front. The (victorious) Confederates buried him in a mass grave together with the black soldiers of his regiment. They intended this as an insult, but his family and friends considered it an honor.
