Victor Frankenstein created the being in the novel by Mary Shelley (or Mary Wollstoncraft as she was at the time), which she commenced to write in response to a challenge by Lord Byron on a wet holiday in Germany.

It is believed that Mary got the name Frankenstein from a nearby castle, Burg Frankenstein, which was actually occupied at one time by a real "mad scientist" , Johann Dippel, who might have provided Mary with her inspiration.

Franken is the German word for Franconia, an area of southern Germany and stein the German word for stone.

It is said that Dr. Frankenstein made a moster of body parts and organs from dead people.

some HAVE SUGGESTED THAT Dr. Frankenstein'S CHARACTER NAME WAS INSPIRED BY Benjamin Franklin EXPERIMENT WITH KITES & LIGHTING.

maybe ? yes maybe No.

Actually it didn't originate from anywhere. It was a book written by Mary Shelly in 1816. She and a bunch of friends (who were male by the way) were stuck indoors due to a storm so they all decided to write a scary story to pass the time. And when she told hers well they were scared all right. In actuality the monster isn't named Frakenstein, it was created by a Dr.Frankenstein in the book so people started calling the monster Frakenstein to make it easier to refer to.

Just to clarify: In the original book by Mary Shelley, Frankenstein is the name of the scientist who created the creature, not the creature.

The creature was never given a name in the book as Frankenstein rejected his creation as 'evil' before having the chance to name it.

Having said that, Frankenstein refers to his creation as a monster and a daemon commonly throughout the book.

So, back to the original question: 'Who named Frankenstein?'

It does not specify, but his surname 'Frankenstein' would be inherited from his parents. (His first name, I believe is Victor.)

The idea and it usually goes Amuck or Amok- of artificial, or even re-animated life is an old one in fiction. it can be argued that the seemingly harmless Pinocchio (literally wooden eye) is a take-off on Frankenstein)- the Golem of the Medieval Rabbinical culture is probably the first- and he gave rise to the idea of Robots also. It is not often realized that a harmless Kiddy cartoon had macabre roots.
