Audie Murphy was a war hero in the 1940's. He, also, tried to join the Marines, but they said he was too short. So, he tried to get into the army. He got in the army and was selected as the most decorated solider. Additionally, he acted in over 30 movies, like Gone with the Wind and Hell and Back. He once wrote songs as well. He died in 1970 in a plane accident on a business trip to Ronoke, Viriginia, which killed every one in the plane. Audie was awarded over 42 medals in the army.

Audie Leon Murphy was the most decorated US soldier of WWII. Some historians now contend that Major Matt Urban won more medals, but its disputable, and for many years Murphy was acknowledged. He was a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry, of the 3rd Infantry Division. He earned a Medal of Honor January 26, 1945 during the Colmar Pocket campaign. Murphy rose from private to captain during the war, being awarded a battlefield commission. After the war he capitalized on his fame by becoming a movie star. He made dozens of films, primarily westerns. His own story, based on his book, "To Hell and Back" was the highest grossing film produced by Universal for more than twenty years, until the studio released "Jaws" in 1975. He was only 44 when he died in a small airplane crash near Roanoke, Virginia in May, 1971.
