Because Snape was in love with Harry's mum, and he also promised Dumbledore. All along Snape was a good guy really, so he'd do the right thing whether he liked Harry or not to make up for all his other mistakes in life.

He did all he could to help protect Harry and destroy Voldemort because Voldemort had betrayed him by killing Lily (Harry's mother), whom he loved. He protected Harry because he knew Harry was the only one who could destroy Voldemort for good.
He did it all for Lily -- not Harry.

∙ 11y agoNarcissa Malfoy lied about Harry being alive because he told her Draco was still alive. Narcissa wanted the battle to end so she could go to the school to see Draco and make sure he was away from danger. She knew if she lied about Harry being dead, Lord Voldemort would stop the fighting.

∙ 8y agoSeverus Snape discovered that Lord Voldemort was going to kill Lily Potter, the only woman he ever loved. Snape turned to Dumbledore to protect her but Dumbledore was disgusted that he was only interest in saving Lily, not James and their son Harry.
When the plan failed and Lily (along with James) was killed, Snape was angry at Dumbledore who then made him promise to help protect Harry as he was Lily's son.
Despite his hatred for James Potter, Snape felt like he owed a debt to Harry since he was the person who told Voldemort about the prophecy.

∙ 8y agoHarry Potter's father, James, once saved Severus Snape's life. Snape never got to pay him back for that (in fact he did the opposite and he gave Voldemort the information that killed Lily and James) and felt he owed a debt. So he repaid it by saving Harry.
Snape also promised Dumbledore that he would protect Harry and keep an eye on him during his time at Hogwarts.
