E E Cummings inspiration came from many different sources. He was born into a Unitarian family and his religion and his transcendential leanings gave him inspiration in all of his works (poetry, novels, painting, plays). Cummings was also influenced by Amy Lowell, Gertrude Stein. The novel The Enormous Room (1922) was inspired and influenced by his three month imprisonment by the French military on suspician of espionage.
