J.K Rowling did call her first novel Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. She named it that because the Philosopher's Stone isn't something of her creation it is a legendary alchemical substance which she incorporated into her books, like many other things (mainly mythical creatures). The famous Alchemist, Nicholas Famel (who was a reason person) tried to find it for years.

It is only named Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone in America because the US publisher said that Sorcerer's sounded more exciting and American's would not understand what a Philosopher was.

J.K Rowling has expressed regret at allowing the name change and said had she been in a better position financially and not desperate to have her book published she would have fought to keep it.

Why didn't J.K. Rowling give Remus Lupin and Nymphadora Tonks a good end?

Originally, Rowling had planned on killing Arthur Weasley, but changed her mind because she wanted to leave Harry with at least one father figure. Instead, she had Lupin and Tonks die in his place. She also needed their son, Teddy, to be an orphan as so to create a shadow of Harry and for all the Marauders to be dead. This meant that Harry could bring him back using the resurrection stone.

Why did J.K. Rowling use initials instead of her real name?

J.K. Rowling used her initials instead of her real name, Joanne Rowling, at the suggestion of her publisher to appeal to a wider audience, particularly young boys. Using initials was believed to make her books more gender-neutral and increase their chances of success in the male-dominated fantasy genre.
