My novel The Robin Hood Chronicles is based on the earliest ballads, which are the oldest sources of information about Robin Hood, and on the life story of a real Robyn Hod, whom I identify with the hero of the ballads for reasons I explain in the Afterword of my book. The real Robyn Hod was a retainer of Thomas, Earl of Lancaster, who attempted to overthrow King Edward II in 1322. Thomas was defeated at the battle of Boroughbridge, and Edward declared all the soldiers who fought under Thomas outlaws. Some of the soldiers went to sea to avoid being hunted down and killed by Edward's soldiers; others, like Robyn Hod, remained in England and lived as best they could.
