Salazar Slytherin didn't think that muggle-born pupils should be educated at Hogwarts as they had dirty blood. However, the other founders disagreed. So, Slytherin built a secret Chamber and hid a Basilisk (a giant serpent) inside. Then, when his own heir (somebody who could speak parseltounge) arrived at the school, they could open the Chamber and release the monster who would purge the school of muggle-born students.
Before Salazar Slytherin, one of the four founders of Hogwarts, left the school, he built the Chamber of Secrets and sealed it so that only the Heir of Slytherin could open it. Inside the Chamber was a monster called a Basilisk. It was put there so that when the Chamber was opened, it would be released and would purge the school of Muggleborns.
Hogwarts was going to be closed after the monster in the Chamber killed a girl (Moaning Myrtle) and Hogwarts couldn't find the Chamber and prevent more students from dying. Tom Riddle, the person really behind the attacks, has nowhere to go as he was an orphan with no family. Hogwarts was the only home he ever knew and to stop it being closed, he framed Hagrid, who was keeping a giant acromantula in the castle.
Ginny was being possessed by Lord Voldemort, she wasn't aware of her actions.
Tom Riddle was trying to lure Harry Potter to him. Also, it meant he could use Ginny to return himself to power.
Tom Riddle wanted to purge the school of muggle-born students who, he believed, didn't deserve to attend Hogwarts as they had stolen magic.
The snake didn't take Ginny into the chamber. Ginny was being possessed by Tom Riddle who made her go down. Riddle made her go there so that Harry would come down and save her.
No. She can't speak Parseltongue, the snake language needed to open the chamber. Ginny Weasley opened it. Ginny could speak Parseltongue because Voldemort was possessing her through the Diary and speaking Parseltongue in her mind.
No. It would be pointless to destroy the chamber, once the monster inside it was dead the chamber posed no harm. Besides, it was so deep under Hogwarts damage to the chamber would probably impact the structure of the building.
The basilisk is the snake mentioned in the book Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
When Harry fights Tom Riddle (teenage Lord Voldemort). They fight in the Chamber of Secrets which was opened by Ginny Weasley, Ron's younger sister, without knowing it. Ginny was controlled by Riddle's diary in which he left a part of his soul.
In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry and Fwakes deafeat the basilisk who lives in the chamber of secrets. The basilisk is a legendary gigantic snake.
