Ares was sent to catch the lightning thief when he came across Luke, the lightning thief. Ares decided, ( since he was the god of war, and if the bolt was not returned there was gonna be a serious war among the gods, possible World War III) he would keep the bolt, and he gave it to Percy once Percy got him back his shield.The bolt was not in the pack until Percy was in the Underworld to confront Hades.As the book says:"I came for the master bolt.""Which you already possess!" Hades shouted. "You came here with it, little fool, thinking you could threaten me!""But I didn't!""Open your pack then."A horrible feeling struck me. The weight in my backpack, like a bowling ball. It couldn't be...I slung it off my shoulder and unzipped it. Inside was a tow-foot-long metal cylinder, spiked on both ends, humming with energy."Percy," Annabeth said. "How--""I -- I don't know. Who took Percy's mom to the underworld?
Hades "freezes" time for Percy's mother so that he can keep her captive without a struggle. Hades feels he needs to do this because he assumes that Percy has his Helm of Darkness, which can make him invisible. Hades knows that Percy would do anything for his mother, so that if he takes her; Percy will find Hades and give him the Helm in return for his mother. Unfortunately Percy doesn't have the Helm and has no idea is his mother is dead, if not how to get her back.
A basic short plot of lightning thief?
A kid named Percy Jackson who finds out he is a demi-god and is not safe any more because Zeus thinks he stole his master lighning bolt. He has to go to camp half blood to train to keep safe from monsters, so he can go to the underworld to save his mother because hades took her, then he has to prove to Zeus that he is not the lighning thief, all by the summer solstice.

Will there be a different cast after the Percy Jackson and the opympians The Sea of Monsters since they are going to be bit older than what they should be in the movie?
I highly doubt that would happen since the Sea of Monsters was only a year later. So they might just keep the original cast, even though they themselves are not the age they should be (Percy was in high school when in the Lightning Thief the book, he was only 12.)
