In the book, The Hunger Games, Katniss is kept alive by her skill with a bow and arrow. She can feed herself, and protect herself. In the very end, though, she upsets The Capitol by tricking it into letting both her and Peeta live. The thing that keeps The Capitol from killing her for her insubordination is the fact that they can try to convince the crowd that they orchestrated the whole event, and that Katniss and Peeta were so in love that they would rather have died then kill the other.
