Why is Vlad tepst famous?

He was not in the book. Vlad Tepes was a prince in Romania in the 1400s. Bram Stoker adopted the prince into a different adaptation to create a remorse tale about a vampire who was a count in Translyvania Romania. He wasn't in the book, he just contributed to the tale that Bram Stoker created.

Some considered Vlad Tepes to be evil. To actually be the son of the devil. But to others he was hero. He fought in the name of Christianity against invading Turks who tried forcing their religion Islam onto more of Europe. His methods for dealing with certains things however gave him such a horrible reputation. He dealt with thieves and liars so badly that everyone in his ruling kingdom never attempted anything like it during his reign and even after. He made Romania strong again, using ways others would call evil. He got rid of the sick, the old, the crippled and the beggers, by killing them. But remember these were hard and anicent times. It may seem brutal to us now, but in those days, it was normal actually. To stamp out weakness in one's country. Also remember that it was Vlad and a number of his family and order - the order of the dragon- that helped defend the belief of Christianity. Though you may not be religious, if Vlad and others hadn't put up such a resistance, we may be forced to follow the belief of Islam to this day. Do not judge those, whom have come to past. Fore you too will be judged on your own judgment...

In other words, better to have an open mind, then single sided :) Like me. I am fully aware of Vlad's heroics as well as his offenses

Vlad Tepes ("Vlad The Impaler") was not a vampire, but Bram Stoker put him in the mix, along with various fantasy stories, and the area of Transylvania, to create Count Dracula. Unfortunately after, Vlad Tepes was associated by some with vampirism.

As you may already know, Vlad Tepes was a 15th century Wallachian prince. He was the second son of Vlad Dracul, (hence the origin of the name Dracula, picked up by Bram Stoker). His favourite method of execution was impalement, a horrible death, so he became know as Vlad Tepes (the Impaler).

Some of Vlad Tepes was incorporated in the film, Bram Stoker's Dracula (directed by Francis Ford Coppola and starring Gary Oldman) when you are lead to believe that Vlad Tepes became Count Dracula. It shows the story about Vlad's wife jumping off the castle tower into the river, because she has been falsely told her husband is dead and the Turks are attacking the Castle. This apparently did happen to Vlad's first wife.

His reputation for cruelty was well known throughout the Renaissance. Nowdays some people confuse him for Dracula, who is the most famous vampire in folklore.
