Why is iron man so courageous?

Iron Man was taken a hostage in a middle eastern country. Another scientist who was from the area was also captured. The middle easterners who had captured tony stark (iron man) asked him to build what he had previously created called a Jericho (i believe that's the spelling) missile.

They gave him all the parts he needed to do so, but instead of building a war missile, tony and the other hostage worked together to create something other than the desired missile. This thing was the iron man suit (the original). Tony used this to escape whereas the other man died. He was then found by a search and rescue team in the dessert. Tony realized instead of continuing to create war weapons the made the war progress, he could use these suits to halt war efforts made by terrorists.

Tony Stark is the main hero in the movie Iron Man. Tony Stark doesn't keep his identity a secret while using his Iron Man suit like most heroes.
