Why is it worth knowing about Marilyn Monroe?

The axiom is a little distorted. Monroe was not an inventor of say appliances such as Light bulb fixtures (Edison) or other useful appliances. She was a popular movie actress and sex symbol It is tempting to say Playboy magazine was a Monroe stepchild- a bad analogy, but it works- but if one examines the facts, she was just one of many actresses and models to be featured in Playboy. Certainly she was in Playboy Magazine, but so was her big rival- and more sophisticated- having studied art and for a good many decades a commercial photographer- the Rose of Fair Italy.
