He was imprisoned for two years for "attempting to commit an unnatural act". Sir George Bromley married Esther Curzon and they had a son Robert. One of Sir George's servants, George Stiff, reported the offence to Sir George Bromley's father-in-law. Sir George Bromley fled to Scotland, but returned after a couple of years to face this court case. After nine hours deliberation the jury found him guilty and he was imprisoned in Nottingham gaol for two years. It led to his divorce and financial problems. After his death there was not enough money to pay the legacies mentioned in his will, so his executors had to auction most of his possessions and houses in order to pay the legacies.
