Albert James Smith was against the Confederation because he feared that the taxpayers of prosperous Brunswick (his home State) would be saddled with a major part of the debts and the cost of developing the Province of Canada. He also feared that in the new Confederation Brunswick would lose control over its own destiny.

After the Confederation became fact, he reconciled himself with the idea and became the Minister of Fisheries in the Confederation government six years after its establishment.
