Natural selection means that, over successive generations, lineages with traits that benefit their carriers in their given habitat are more likely to persist and thrive than lineages with traits that benefit their carriers to a lesser extent or not at all.

For instance, in arctic conditions, families of wolves with a thinner pelt might produce, on average, fewer offspring than families of wolves with a thicker pelt, and so the alleles that are associated with thinner rather than thicker pelts will, over successive generations, fade from the population.

Because there's always variation in all heritable traits, this means that the average phenotypical makeup of a population is always drifting, changing.

Summarizing: natural selection doesn't exactly 'lead to' evolution: natural selection is a part of evolution, a contributing factor. You might say it's the part of evolution that gives evolution direction.

Natural selection is, the nonrandom survival and reproductive success of randomly varying organisms.

Evolution is the change in allele frequency over time in a population of organisms.

So, as organisms become reproductively successful they leave more progeny with the alleles that made them more reproductively successful and then the alleles in the populations gene pool are changed in frequency, the representation of alleles changes, and evolution takes place
