-- Picture yourself in a dark room, when someone else in the room lights a match.
Do you see it immediately, or do you have to shine your flashlight at it to see it ?
-- Picture yourself in your house in Merry Olde England, late at night, around the year 1641 .
It's getting late, you've seen the news and sports on the tele, and you're ready to turn in.
As you walk over to the bottom of the stairs, you notice how dark it is up there. You're
a bit drowsy, and quite absent-mindedly, you reach out to the side and rub your hand
up the wall to turn on the light switch.
Suddenly you're shocked back to wakefulness and you recoil in Horror, when you
realize that there's no switch there because the electric light hasn't been invented
yet ! This is devastating, depressing. Whatever shall you do ? Can you risk walking
up the stairs in the dark ? Impossible ! Anything but that !
By now you're becoming less sad and more annoyed. Even, truth be told, somewhat
angry with your situation. Millions of years of evolution tell you that you must now
jump up and down, beat the wall with your fists, and assail the air and everyone
within earshot with a torrent of crimson expletives.
But an instant later, your civilized side wins out, and you realize that rather than
curse the darkness, it is better to . . . . . (wait for it) . . . . . light one candle !
You light the candle, the candle lights your way, your way is made clear, and
all's right with your world. I'm so happy that everything worked out so well for
you, and all because the timid flame on the tip of one candle gave up enough
light to illuminate the entire staircase, guarding you from danger and guiding
you in safety.
