Most substances become more dense as their temperatures decrease. The bonds between each atom gets close and stronger, thus harder to break apart.

However, water has a special property that, at 4 degrees Celsius, the atoms are the most dense. As water gets colder, the atoms get further apart, so when water is 0 degrees Celsius (Freezing point) then the atoms are less dense than water at 4 degrees Celsius. When a substance is less dense than the liquid it`s placed in, it would float. That`s why ice water would float on water.

Is a solid denser than gases and liquids?

Generally solids are denser than gas and liquids.

What does sound wave move best through?

The denser a material is, the faster sound waves will propagate through it. Sound wave will generally propagate more easily through solids as they are denser than liquids or gases.

When comparing solids liquids and gases which phase generally has the greatest density?

Solids

Why are solids denser then liquids?

Because molecular(atomic)distance is less in solid than liquid.

What material does sound travel through the fastest?

There are too many 'materials' to list but generally, sound travels faster in solids than in liquids, and faster in liquids than in gases. In other words, the denser the material, the faster sound travels.

Why is gas denser than liquids and solids?

Gas isn't denser than liquids and solids. It's the other way around. And THIS is because the atoms in liquids and solids are closer together and there is less space to move around. In solid objects, the atoms are so close and compacted they don't move. in liquids, the atoms are a little bit farther apart. in gases, they are very spread out, making the amount of atoms LESS dense than the solids.

Why are liquids more heavier than solids?

Liquids are generally heavier than solids because the molecules in liquids are more densely packed together and have more mass per unit volume compared to solids. Additionally, liquids tend to have a higher density than solids, making them heavier when compared in equal volumes.

Are liquids dense?

Some liquids are denser than others. In general, everyday experience, most liquids are denser than gases, but not as dense as solids. There are some exceptions to this rule.

Are solids Less dense than liquids?

Not necessarily. The density of a substance depends on its mass and volume, so it can vary for both solids and liquids. In general, solids are denser than liquids because the particles in solids are typically more closely packed together.

Do mechanical waves travel faster in solids or liquids?

Mechanical waves involve the physical transfer of vibration from one particle to another within the medium. Denser materials (solids and liquids), have closer particles so this transfer of energy occurs more quickly. :)

Which is less dense liquids or solids?

Matter being liquid or solid has nothing to do with density. These are states of matter. Ice floats on water.
