A Retaining Wall is typically a wall for holding in place a mass of earth as at the edge of a terrace or excavation. A retaining wall is a structure designed and constructed to resist the lateral pressure of soil when there is a desired change in ground elevation that exceeds the angle of repose of the soil. It could also be used as a structure for maintaining the bottom surfaces at very different elevations. It provides lateral support to vertical slopes of soil. Poor drainage destroys most retaining walls. Build in drainage right in the wall from base to close to the top. A solid footer is necessary for tall walls otherwise they shift as the seasons change and walls collapse. All footers should extend below the frost line.
