Acid rain is a problem for areas of Canada that are primarily hard rock, such as granite. This includes northern areas with few vegetation and thus, little soil, and lakes and thin layers of soils resting on granite bedrocks, making more than half of Canada susceptible to the detrimental environmental effects of acid rain. This is because such environments cannot neutralize acid rain, and it deteriorates the ecosystems. Fish, frogs, birds and insects that live in over-acidified environments start to disappear, and the acidified areas may eventually become devoid of most animal life. Trees are also affected, as acid rain damages the tree's leaves and needles and reduced the amount of nutrients in the soil. Eastern Canada is affected more than Western Canada, because of its granite bedrocks and the weather patters that bring acid rain to the East coast. Furthermore, human lives are affected because the waterways are interconnected, and sulfur dioxide, a component of acid rain, can form fine particles of sulphate and pollute the air we breathe. The health effects of this are wide-ranging and cost millions of dollars.
