- Well, so far there are two types of cloning. One is embryo splitting which involves removing the genetic material of a fertilized egg (zygote) with the genetie material of a different life form, the you implant it into a female mammal.The second way is called Nuclear transfer technology this involves removing DNA from an unfertilized egg (oocyte) and then you inject the nucleus that contains DNA to be cloned. Rarely the newly developed cell will divide properly, replicating the DNA; at this point it is still in a 'pluripotent' (stem cell) state, if the cells are then placed into a uterus of a mammal, rarely the organism develops. Reproductive Cloning

Cloning via somatic cell nuclear transfer can also be used to reproductively clone a person by allowing the germinal stage embryo to gestate to full-term. The resulting life is a genetic copy of the DNA donor - a delayed identical twin rather than off-spring. This cloning method was pioneered by researchers at the Roslin Institute in Edinburgh, UK. These scientists cloned the first mammal, a sheep called Dolly. But this method is of little use to the longevity and continuity of an individual self because it only creates a copy of a person's body, not the mental history of an individual self.

However, aside from reproductive cloning, stem-cell research is generally useful for the purposes of longevity and is used in a variety of medical practices, including the healing of spinal-injuries and paralysis, burns, eye-problems, heart defects, and cancer treatments. But because these stem-cell replacements are from donors rather than DNA clones, complications like cancer or rejection can occur.

Therapeutic Cloning

Recently however, Woo Suk Hwang of Seoul National University, South Korea, has developed an improved technique for therapeutically cloning blastocysts to harvest totipotent stem-cells for patients with various diseases and injuries. Unlike the riskier business of matching foreign stem-cells with a patient's tissues, these stem-cells exactly match a patient's DNA because they come from the patient (autotransplantation). If grown to replace injured or diseased organs, tissues or bone, the cloned replacements should be accepted by the patient's immune system without the serious complications and continued medications that usually accompany organ transplantation, skin-grafting, and other forms of replacement surgery. Progress in this area of science could mean that eventually any part of the body will be replaceable, making prosthetics obsolete and allowing people to recover from many diseases and injuries. This continual renewal of areas of the body should postpone death - perhaps indefinitely.

1951 was when the first successful clone of a frog egg was created, though some early attempts at cloning in the 1800's were made. Hans Dreisch was the man in the late 1800's to conduct attempts at cloning a sea urchin.Although the cloning on non-mammals was first accomplished way back in 1952, the world had to wait for another 44 years before the first mammal was finally cloned. The first cloned mammal, a sheep named Dolly was born on 5th July 1996. The birth of Dolly had established the ability of we humans to clone mammals. And being mammals themselves, this was an important milestone for the human race. In this fascinating history of cloning, a major setback came in 2003 when Dolly died at the age of six. The death of this first cloned mammal was followed by an intense debate, about the ethical issues of cloning, which continues even today.A Brief History of CloningCloning is basically the process by which a genetically identical copy of a particular bacteria, plant or animal is produced by asexual reproduction. Active transport-occurs when molecules moves from a lower concentration to a higher concentration through a semi-permeable membrane with the assistance of proteins and the use of ATP energy. 4. Endocytosis- large amounts of molecules move toward the inside of a cell. This is a form of Active Transport. 5. Exocytosis- large amounts of molecules move toward the outside of a cell. This is a form of Active Transport.
