Lamarck's folly was that he thought evolution was caused by acquired traits being passed down from parent to offspring. An acquired trait is one which an organism acquires during its lifetime. This theory would suggest that a bodybuilder, who has bulked up during the course of his or her life, could pass a super-muscular physique on to the next generation. Of course we know this is not the case. The only way the bodybuilder's child is going to have a super-muscular physique is if the child also becomes a bodybuilder. The bodybuilder's child could even sit around all day eating Cheetos and playing Video Games, resulting in a very different physique from his or her parents.

Darwin's theory of evolution, the correct one, tells us that evolution is caused by inherited traits passed from parent to offspring. If a parent is naturally more muscular than average, this is a trait resulting from his or her genetics, and its possible that the child will inherit this genetic makeup and also be more muscular than average.

Lamarck believed that organisms evolved toward perfection. Unlike other scientists, he did not believe that organisms went extinct; instead he believed they must have evolved into different forms. For example, he believed that the long necked giraffe got their long neck by how they reach for tall trees and they eventually grew into their long necks.

If the species required more food to survive, and saw the lush offerings high above, and there was a competition for food, then this would happen.

Imagine if a giraffe has a slightly taller neck than the rest of its species, a variation. This giraffe would therefore be more likely to survive because it is able to reach more food which no one else can reach so it has the food for itself.

Let's say then that a drought happens, and there is a lack of vegetation which only exists in the large trees which stored lots of water. Hundreds of the species would have died out and been unable to reproduce.

HOWEVER, since there is one giraffe with that slightly taller neck that is able to reach more food than the others and thus survive, it lives and therefore is able to reproduce.

Eventually, the gene is passed down to its second generation and so on, and the giraffes with the small neck either too evolve to reach this high vegetation or die out, AKA, extinction.

Over time, necks get longer and longer in order to reach more and more food. Evolution stops however when a species has evolved to such an extent that evolution would be entirely unnecessary or dangerous.

Which of the following ideas proposed by Lamarck was later found to be incorrect?

Lamarck thought characteristics, such as a giraffes long neck were caused by them stretching it during their lives and passing that onto their offspring - saying acquired characteristics were passed on through genetics. What actually happens is natural selection, which means the giraffes born with long necks (by slight mutations or chance) survived better than the ones with shorter necks, as they were able to eat better, so they were able to breed and pass on the genes for long necks where the short necked giraffes died. This theory was thought of by Darwin.

How were lamarck's beliefs different from Darwin's?

Lamarcks theory was accepted during Darwin's life, stated that an orgnisims use or disuse of an organ lead to its refinment. That parents could pass on traits acquired during its life to its offspring. Darwin stated that changes in offspring were random and could not be modified by the parents actions. Evolution was still the same, changes accumulating over time, but how those changes came about, through the organisim its self, lamark, or randomly Darwin.

Which is the following would describe lamarcks ideas about evolution?

Mainly that animals can change their own forms over time and that these traits are inherited by their offspring. A classic example is of a giraffe making its neck longer and longer by stretching for food that is high in the trees. These individuals would then produce children with long necks. This concept of evolution is incorrect because individuals do not have conscious control over physiological changes to their body structure, and these conscious changes would definitely not be inheritable by offspring. Change is caused by random mutation in genes. Changes in body structure only happen at the group level because individuals born with an advantageous trait will produce more children than those who don't. However, it should be noted that the newly emerging field of Epigenetics shows that Lamarck was at least partly right. The environment in which an individual lives can determine when or if a gene is activated. This can be passed on to offspring.

How is theory of evolution of Darwin and Hugo deVries different?

Darwin considered evolution to be caused due to : 1)small changes/variations that occured 2)these variations were directed specifically towards adapting to the environment(directional) 3)evolution was a slow process De Vries believed that evolution occured by: 1)large changes that occured 2)these changes were mutations and were stochastic or random, not directional 3)evolution occured in fits and starts and was not a slow ongoing process

Is limited resources discourage the evolution of species true about evolution?

No. It is merely one of many parameters that influence the direction of evolution, and can actually be a driving force in evolution. For example, the rise of warm-blooded mammals as a result of colder climate (a clear period of limited food resources) caused by climatic or astronomical phenomena, like the impact of a meteor.

Stated that inheritance of acquired traits caused change in a species over time?

Lamarck thought acquired traits were past on, but he was prover wrong by Darwin and his natural selection idea.

What did lamarck think evolution involved that caused his ideas to be incorret?

Lamarck believed that traits acquired by one individual, will be immediately passed down on it's descendants. FE: If your father was a smith, you will have stronger muscles and bigger hands. Which is not true because evolution like that happens over thousands maybe millions of years and genetic changes are only expressed if the mutations occur in the DNA of the reproductivecells (spermproducingcells etc) Note: Lamarck has proven to be right by scientist nowadays in the point of genetic expression: Children of people who survived the Hunger Winter in Holland of 1944 have more chance on heart diseases and become thicker more easily. This change is directed to the fact that certain events can activate certain genes, thus stating that Lamarck's theory isn't entirely wrong

How did evolution start?

The point of Evolution is that it doesn't start or stop at any given point. It's a natural process that happens throughout life. Evolution is caused by triggers in genes. Different animals have different triggers. These triggers can be caused by different things, but most commenly a change in habitat.
