salted meats. Salt would absorb the moisture in the meats, allowing them to stay fresh for weeks and months on end without spoiling. They would also have many many many barrels of fresh water, as you can not drink ocean salt water like normal water without spewing everything you have eaten over the past few days overboard.

add. Salted beef could have the dried form as above, or the wet product we know as corned beef - a spiced version of the product. It was said that you could tell when the bottom of the beef barrel was getting near, for the horse shoes would be found.
