Reading is more important than anything else. Not just reading poetry (which is necessary) but reading generally. Developing a keen sensitivity to the language, its richness and depth, its subtleties and nuances, its history, its variations, its rules and the beautiful breaking of them. Because that is how poetry is written.

And then being a keen observer: of life, the world, yourself, sensation, experience, emotion, and everything else. Because that is what poetry is about.

What courses would you take for a bachelor's degree if your undergraduate major is English and you plan to become a poet?

You should see an academic adviser and request a change of major from business to English. Then you should meet with the department chairperson of the English department to determine the most appropriate approach based on your career objectives. Becoming a recognized poet is like becoming a recognized artist. The degree does not automatically make you a poet. In addition, I would strongly recommend you develop a contingency plan in the case that the poet career does not become a reality.
