Adaptive evolution is caused by natural selection.

Natural selection means that some individuals leave more offspring than others. On average, the individuals which are best adapted to their environment will survive and leave more offspring than others.

In this way the genes for the useful adaptations will become more common and genes for less useful characteristics will become less common ie the species will become better adapted to its environment.

There are three main mechanisms that can cause changes in allele frequency.

These include natural selection, genetic drift, and gene flow.

Gene frequencies in a population change because of some change or pressure on that population. For example, snowshoe rabbits have a high frequency of white fur genes and low frequency of black or brown genes, because the presence of dark fur would make them more likely to be eaten by predators. Dark rabbits would therefore not be as likely to pass on their dark fur genes. If the climate were to warm over a long period of time and snow was no longer camouflage but instead, shrubs, trees, or grasses were dominant, the gene frequency for darker fur may become more prevalent since they would provide a selective advantage and white fur genes would become less frequent. Gene frequencies change due to changes in the survival of the organism over many generations.

What is the central force driving evolution?

Reproductive variation is central to evolution. All else in evolutionary theory follows directly or indirectly from the fact that organisms reproduce with variation.

Which of the following is the most powerful evolutionary force in large populations over time?

Only natural selection could be the answer here as natural selection is the main driver of adaptive change leading to evolutionary change and speciation in large populations.

Which force of evolution makes a population more alike?

Stabilizing selection occurs when the extreme forms of some trait are selected against by natural selection. It is a force of natural selection which causes evolution (definition: change of allele frequency in a population divided by time).

Why is the theory of evolution so hard for so many people to understand?

As one Nobel prize said, "The problem with evolution is that everyone thinks they understand it." Probably the main reason that evolution is difficult to understand is that it requires the acceptance of "deep time" - extremely long periods of time. Another thing that is difficult to grasp is that evolution isn't about "survival of species"; most evolutionary biologists consider the survival of genes and the driving force of evolution.

How does the Air Force support the Joint Adaptive planning process?

The Air Force supports the Joint/Adaptive planning process in the following ways: build plans; provide details to apportionment guidance; and develop planning policies.

Have we humans stunted our evolutionary path by increases in medical science?

No. This is a common misconception that natural selection will not eliminate the " weak " id we medically ameliorate their problems. This misconception is even held by some biologists. Actually, the coin evolution pays in is reproductive success and natural selection can be a creative force to that end. Evolution is the change in allele frequency over time in a population of organisms and the " stunted path " concept implies progress in evolution, but evolution does not care about progress, only reproductive success. If alleles change frequency in populations of organisms, which they do, evolution is not being " stunted, " whatever that means.
