The seasons happen when the Earth changes position - as the Earth travels around the sun, it spins on it's axis. The axis in the middle of the earth, is tilted at 23.5 degrees to one side, so as the earth spins while travelling around the sun, the tilt of the axis changes, so either the northern hemishpere or southern hemisphere is closer of further from the sun at different times. When closer it's summer, when further it's winter, and spring and autumn happen in between.
