If an atom loses an electron, its charge becomes a positive. (The process of losing an electron is called OXIDATION, by the way.)

Depending on the electron configuration, the atom could become "happy" (because its outer ring is now empty) or it could want to bond with another atom to fill ALL of the spots on its outer electron ring.

If an atom looses an Electron it is going to have a positive charge because there will then be more protons than electrons in the outermost ring of your atom!

Therefore, if an atom were to gain an electron it would be just the opposite, your atom would become negatively charged because there would be more electrons than protons in the outermost ring of your atom!
