A flourescent lamp is a gas-discharge lamp that uses electricity to excite Mercury vapor in argon or neon gas, resulting in a plasma that produces short-wave ultraviolet light. This light then causes a phosphor to fluoresce, producing visible light.

Florescent light bulbs contain gases that get ionised when electricity is passed through it and they begin to emit light known as fluorescent light.

This emission of light takes place due to increase in energy level of the protons (nucleus) rather than the electrons. This difference in energy gets emitted as light.

Mercury vapor is the important one. There may be other gases as well.

How does fluorescent work?

Fluorescent lights glow because of an electric discharge in a glass tube that causes mercury atoms to emit ultraviolet light. The inside of the tube is coated with phosphor, which absorbs the ultraviolet light and then re-emits visible light.

How is fluorescent different from natural light?

Well.. the difference is that fluorescent light isn't natural and natural light isn't fluorescent . its not rocket science (:

Compact fluorescent lamps have made a lot of changes in the lighting sector it is also changed from a fluorescent lamp to compact fluorescent lamps but still it is dependent on the ballast Why?

A ballast is an electrical component used with a fluorescent bulb (or mercury vapor lamp or arc lamp) to conduct electricity at each end of the tube. Compact fluorescent light bulbs are dependent on ballast because they use a gas to create light. when the gas is excited by electricity, it emits invisible ultraviolet light that hits the white coating inside the fluorescent bulb. The coating changes the ultraviolet light into light you can see.

Is it possible to wire fluorescent lights inside a cargo van easily without converter?

You can go to one of those motor home supply stores and purchase a 12 volt fluorescent light assemblies. Otherwise, if you want to use a conventional fluorescent light you'll need to use an inverter.

Why does a plasma ball make fluorescent light bulbs light up?

Anything that excites the gas in a fluorescent will make it light. Static electricity from the carpet will cause compact fluorescent to light.

Will a low watt transformer operate a fluorescent light bulb?

Apart from no, your question has no simple answer. Fluorescent lamps need a few kV to start them and have a 90V drop when running. All of that is provided by the "gear" needed to run a fluorescent lamp. In a compact fluorescent (CFL), the gear is inside the cap.

Why does a fluorscent light not work in the cold?

fluorescent bulbs have mercury in them. There are heaters at the ends of the bulb that vaporizes the mercury to allow the light to be produced ( the fluorescence on the inside of the bulb is what actually glows). If the bulb is cold you do not get the ionization of the mercury to cause the fluorescent powder inside the bulb to glow, or it just glows a small amount.
