Due to high KE at the exit of reaction turbine, there would be a loss of overall reduction in KE. So to prevent this loss, the draft tube is provided which produces nett effect of increasing the pressure head at the expense of KE. So this helps the effective pressure head to increase between the inlet and exit of reaction turbine.

In a Reaction turbine,the Draft Tube is used to reduce the exit velocity loss in order to minimize the exit energy loss. The conical Draft tube ensures this as the diverging area ensures a lower velocity at draft tube exit (since acc. to Q = VxA; the continuity principle,an increase in area renders a decrease in velocity) than its entry point ( at runner exit). A straight (uniform c/s draft tube) draft tube will impart no reduction in the magnitude of exit velocity and thus the employment of a draft tube at the runner exit will be futile.

The Kaplan turbine is a newer, more revolutionary version of the Francis turbine, which came before it. The draft tube is used so that the turbine does not need to be where the water flow is lowest.
Draft tube has following purpose :- 1. It makes possible the installation of the turbine above the tail race level without the loss of head. 2. the velocity of water at the runner outlet is very high. By employing a draft tube of increasing cross sectional area, the discharge takes place at a much lower velocity and thus, a part of the kinetic energy that was going as a waste is recovered as a gain in the pressure head, and this increases the efficiency of the turbine. 3.The draft tube prevents the splashing of water coming out of the runner and guides the water to the tail race.
