It is a rather complicated subject. To put it simply, it is an extension of string theory, where higher dimensional "membranes" exist, and the collision of two membranes was possibly the cause of our own Universe. We supposedly live in a three-dimensional "brane". According to string theory there are ten spatial dimensions plus time.

it is a theory of theories .its a kind of theory that constitutes of all the explainations. every thing can be found within it ,from gravity to electrons or anything can be found attached or originated from it. it can also be called the ultimate explanation of the beginning and end of the universe . and probably be called the expansion of the string theory.

How many dimensions are respectably embraced by science in 2012?

Depends what you mean by "respectably." M Theory, a type of string theory, requires the existence of eleven dimensions in which the strings can vibrate. If you consider M Theory to be "respectable," then the answer is eleven. If your view of M Theory is that, "It's so bad a theory that it's not even wrong," then you might say that eleven dimensions is not respectable.

What does the M in M-theory stand for?

It is generally agreed that the M stands for "membrane" though the words magic, matrix, mother, and some others, have been suggested. The scientist who named this theory actually didn't say what the "M" stands for.
