There are two types of chalk, calcium sulfate and calcium carbonate.

The natural occurring sedimentary rock called chalk is a form of limestone made of the compound calcium carbonate. One of the crystal forms is calcite, which the melting point is 1,339 °C (2,442 °F; 1,612 K). The melting point of a second crystal form, aragonite, is 825 °C (1517 °F; 1,098 K).

Blackboard chalk is made of calcium sulfate, also known as gypsum. The melting point is 1,460 °C (2,660 °F; 1,730 K),
