Protein is crucial to build and maintain muscle. Since we are made of protein, it is in a sense the most important nutrient. However, it does not need to be the most abundant nutrient. Protein works very effictively when carbohydrates are your primary engergy source, but due to the abundance of carbs in every food, I'd focus more on getting your protein.
