It is called the US standard system. It is easier to use the metric system as it is based on powers of 10. It is also easier to use.
The conventional system is based on such things as feet. And they mean feet. How long is the average foot? Someone could walk with one foot in front of the other and give the length of something. A measure still used today is called hands. It is used to measure the height of a horse from the ground to the top of the withers. The withers are where the shoulder form the highest point on the horse. Each hand is four inches (actually) four fingers. These are all old and very inaccurate ways. It would be great if the entire world would use the metric system.

There are several alternatives. Historically, the main non-metric system was the Imperial system, which got its name from, and was used across, the British Empire. However, the British Empire in no more and most countries of the former Empire use the SI system of measurement. Officially, the only exceptions are the USA, Burma, Liberia and a few Caribbean islands.
