Elements are are given names - eg Gold, silver, Chlorine, Oxygen, Iron etc.

However, writing the full name in chemical formulae is cumbersome and elements are therefore given a one or two letter symbol which stands for a foreshortening of their name - eg Gold (Au), Silver (Ag), Chlorine (CL), Oxygen (O), Iron (Fe) etc.

These are symbols of an element.
