Electromagnetic waves don't need anything to travel. This kind of waves does not need a medium to move through, therefore they can even travel through outer space.

Because sound waves are displacements of molecules of the medium they travel through, reducing the amplitude would mean decreasing the displacement the molecules experience as the wave passes through. Even though sound waves are longitudinal (meaning the displacement is in the direction the wave travels in) and waves in water are transversal (the displacement is perpendicular to the wave's direction), an example can be found in water waves; reducing the amplitude in water waves would reduce the size/height of the waves. In the case of audible sound waves reducing the amplitude will decrease the volume of the sound.
Sound travel faster in solids than in liquids, and faster in liquids than in gases. Sound travels faster in water than in the air but in solids it travels about eight times faster. Sound travels at the fastest speed in steel. In solids it travel faster in a hot surface, the particles move faster if the solid is cold its slower the movement.

Sound waves need a medium (such as air, water, metal and other materials) to travel through. Sound waves travel by slightly displacing the atoms from their original position as it moves. With empty space (no atoms) the sound waves cannot travel at all. In general, sound travels slower in gasses, then faster in liquids, and even faster in solids. Each substance is different, though.
Energy can travel through empty space in the form of electromagnetic waves, such as light, gamma rays, and radio waves. These waves do not require a medium to propagate and can travel through the vacuum of space.
Sound doesn't travel through any gases very well, Sound travels 10 times faster and much further (about 20Km) in liquids, and sound travels even better in solids as particles are closer together. Just so you know, sound DOES NOT travel through a vacuum (e.g space).
Sound waves travel through vibrations. If one particle starts vibrating it will pass on that movement to other particles that are close by. This means that sound travels quickly through solids as the particles are closely packed and readily pick up movement from their neighbours; it travels less quickly through liquids as the particles are close enough to pick up vibrations but not tightly packed like they are in solids; sound travels slowest through gases (weird, but true - even though we rely on gases to pass on the sounds we make in speech) because their particles are much further apart. If there are no particles - like in a vacuum such as you'd find in space - then sound can't travel at all!
All waves carry energy away from their source through the movement of the wave disturbance. This energy transfer can occur through various mediums such as air, water, or even empty space for electromagnetic waves.
