Peak oil should be reached before 2020. As global oil production declines, more industries will switch to alternative energy resources. Some of the problem industries are transportation, which cannot easily switch off oil, and agriculture, which requires the energy efficiency of fossil fuel for combines and other heavy farm equipment. You're not going to combine wheat off solar power.

If oil were to suddenly vanish, food distribution networks would collapse. No grain shipments overseas could occur, which now use huge diesel powered cargo freighters. No diesel trains could haul grain from amber fields over purple mountain's majesty. After about two weeks food stores would be largely depleted, and die offs from massive starvation would ensue within a month after that.

Our planet can support a population of around four billion people with current technology.
