Plants are producers. Unlike consumers, producers take in Carbon Dioxide (a gas), and release Oxygen. Bacteria also plays a big part in the life cycle of plants, turning nitrogen into a kind plants can use. With all this, the plant can breath so it can continue its life by making chlorophyll from the sun's energy. Is that a good answer? Please give feedback. Thanks.
If by food you mean glucose for the purpose of respiration then the gas used is Carbon Dioxide in a process called Photosynthesis.
Plants use carbon dioxide and give off oxygen as a waste product.
CO2
The gas that causes food to ripen is Methane - It's commonly used to ripen bananas on an industrial scale.
GAS
The gas making the popping noise is hydrogen.
Plants give off waste as a products through photosynthesis. These wastes include but are not limited to oxygen the gas.
Oxygen- It is important for human existance. And also for cooking food because it helps burning. Nitrogen- It is useful for plant's roots. Carbon- Food is made up of mainly by carbon, hydrogen & oxygen. so it is important for making food. Hydrogen- function is food making. Neon,Argon,Xenon,Crypton- These all gases are noble or stable gases. Means their atoms have full no. of electrons. Means no extra or less electron is there. So their function is to keep the atmosphere balanced. Carbon-di-oxide- It keeps temparature balanced of atmosphere or air. Helium- It is very light-weight gas. So it is important in mansoon.
oxygen
Plants add oxygen to the atmosphere during photosynthesis or food making.
For making sugar in plants.

Carbon Dioxide
Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
Carbon dioxide is used. Oxygen gas is released
Carbon-dioxide
Oxygen! O2. The proses that plants go through to get food (aka glucose) is photosynthesis. The formula for photosynthesis is:6Co2 (carbon dioxide) + 6H2O (water) --> C6H12O6 (glucose) + 6O2 (oxygen)
