Stephen Hawking is a theoretical physicist and cosmologist. He is best known for his work in the fields of cosmology and quantum gravity, especially his work on black holes. Stephen was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a type of motor neurone disease, at the age of 21. At the age of 43, he contracted pneumonia, which was life threatening considering his ALS. He had an emergency tracheotomy performed on him, which resulted in the loss of what remaining ability he had to speak. Stephen is now confined to a wheelchair and uses an electronic voice synthesiser to communicate. He is almost completely paralysed.
