When there are too many factors to account for or it would be too complex to do so then a controlled experiment would either be impossible or impractical. For example, Jane Goodall studied chimpanzees but she couldn't do so under controlled circumstances. Besides being dangerous, costly, and extraordinarily difficult to do, taking the chimps out of their natural habitat in order to put them under controlled circumstances would actually alter their behavior so that she wouldn't be gathering the information that she wanted about how they go about their normal day to day lives. Instead of controlled experiments, she studied them through observation.
