Its just due to the "physical" definition of work. In order for a force to do work on an object it must move (at least some component of it) parallel to the force. So when lifting, the force is up and the movement is up and the force does work. In carrying, the force is up but the movement is horizontal. They are perpendicular and the force does no work.
