Very few of them do open at night

--

In most green plants the stomata are only open during the day. They allow carbon dioxide to reach the cells where the majority of photosynthesis takes place. As they also allow transpiration (water loss) the stomata of most plants close during the night when photosynthesis is not possible.

There is a group of mainly desert plants known as CAM plants. These carry out a process called Crassulacean acid metabolism, which effectively allows them to store carbon dioxide in their leaves. In these plants the stomata are normally closed during the day to prevent water loss when temperatures are high, and open during the night when temperatures are lower.

Stomata close at night to reduce water loss. They lose water when it is open so they open in the day when CO2 is at it's best. Obviously, they only photosynthesize during the day and so at night they shut their stomata's so they don't loose water.

Just to clarify, there is no significant difference in CO2 levels during the day and night. However most plants are unable to store CO2, so they have no use for it at night when they can't photosynthesise due to a lack of light.

CAM plants are an exception to this.

Yes. In the day time , CO2 is required for the photosynthesis. Therefore, stoma open to allow CO2 get in.

As CAM plants grow in dry desert areas , to prevent water loss (through transpiration) they keep their stomata closed at daytime and opens at night.

Do all plants have the same amount of stomata?

No, not all plants have the same number of stomata. Stomata numbers vary among different plant species and can be influenced by environmental factors.

Why are stomata usually closed in the dark?

In the day plants use their stomatas to absorb carbon dioxide. However, in the night, plants absorb oxygen instead of carbon dioxide thus they stop their stomatas from absorbing anymore carbon dioxide by closing them

What are the two photosystems in plants called and what does each consist of?

Two common photosynthesis systems operate in plants, the so-called C3 and C4 systems. Not in the same plant. Called so by the number of carbon atoms in the chemistry of the reaction. There is a less common photosynthesis system called CAM (after the names in the mechanism) and this is found in tropical/desert plants and in some epiphytes. These plants have to conserve water, so their stomata; used to breathe; open at night, and they store up the CO2 for reaction during the day when their stomata are closed.

What kind of a leaf has a special design for a special function?

1. The Blechnum family of ferns have a special form for the fronds that carry fertile spores. Conspicuously different from the normal fronds.2. The plants that use the C4 process for photosynthesis use a design in which the stomata are closed during the day, and open at night.3. Some plants have leaves that are unattractive to browsing animals. Gorse is one of these.

How does the stomata help carry out photosynthesis?

The stomata are small openings in the bottom of a leaf that absorb carbon dioxide which is then combined with sugar to make glucose or sugar for the plant to turn into energy to carry out specific functions.

What do leaves go through at night?

At night, the leaves of C3 plants close their stomata and wait until the sunlight. For CAM plants, this is when the plants open their stomata and allow the carbon dioxide to come in.

Plants that fix CO2 into organic acids at night when the stomata are open and carry out the Calvin cycle during the day when the stomata are closed are called?

CAM plants

CAM plants close their what during the day and open them at night?

Cam plants close during the night and open during the day because they are photosensitive and respond to light. To do it experimentally, try with a torch for some time.

Why do some plants close their stomata at night?

At night, there is no light, therefore no photosynthesis (which is the process of making energy from light). Photosynthesis uses CO2, however since photosynthesis is not occurring at night, there is no need to acquire CO2.Some plants (CAM plants) only open their stomata at night, however, in order to take in CO2 and store it until it is light and they can use photosynthesis then. This helps to eliminate water loss through the stomata which would occur more rapidly if the stomata were open during a hot day. (therefore, most CAM plants are found in desserts and such)

Why are stomsta shut at night?

Stomata are shut at night to conserve water. When there is no light, plants cannot fix carbon dioxide. Stomata are usually open to allow entrance of carbon dioxide. A side effect is that water is lost from the leaves. There is an exception to this, however. CAM plants such as cacti and succulents open the stomata at night, store carbon dioxide as acids, and close them during the day to prevent dessication from harsh desert conditions.

No, not all plants have the same number of stomata. Stomata numbers vary among different plant species and can be influenced by environmental factors.

Why don't plants keep their stomata open all time?

Plants don't keep their Stomata open all the time to prevent too much water loss.

When are the stomata of leaves usually open?

Depending on the environment of the plant, stomata will open and close at different times. In hot, dry environments stomata will open around dusk and dawn to minimise water loss. In Wet environments stomata will open during the day as needed
