Sawdust and cloth are non-metals and thus insulators of heat. They slow down the melting process of the blocks of ice so it gets to where its supposed to be without becoming a messy puddle of water.

Both wood and wool are bad conductors of heat. They do not permit heat rays to reach the ice easily. they are natural insulators - like a thermos - but they do not stop it from melting, they only slow down the process.

Ice packed in saw dust does not melt quickly why?

the sawdust acts as insulation isolating the ice from warm air

How does a blanket kept things warm?

A blanket keeps you warm by containing your body heat, under the blanket, so that your body temperature stays comfortable. It also keeps the colder air from contacting your skin. A blanket creates a air barrier around you and insulates that area. Just like wool socks and thermal underwear, it keeps wind from removing the heat that is trapped there. Wind removes heat faster than most things. To see an example, take an ice cube and place it on a plate, take another and place it on a plate in front of a fan. The ice cube in front of the fan will melt faster because the ambient air is removed. A tent or an igloo serve the same purpose by creating a still air mass.

What is the best way to keep an icecube from melting?

Obviously putting it in the freezer will keep it from melting. Other good insulators are: - Styrofoam - Bubble wrap - Copper

Can food keep cool underground?

Yes. The temperature is always cooler underground. There have been several people who have made underground homes and gardens. We have one in this area and it gets a 100+ in the summer, but he was able to keep his home and garden cool with no air conditioning because it was underground. Before modern ways to keep food cold people had "root cellars" where they kept food because it would keep the food cooler. In some cases they would put blocks of ice in as well with sawdust to keep it from melting so fast and they could actually keep ice cream there.
