Newton discovering gravity is important because we know what it is that is keeping us from floating, and so that others know that there is no way of floating/flying without apparel. Newton's discovery has probably save countless lives, stopping people from jmping off cliffs and whatnot.

For a start, knowing the relation between distance, masses, and the force of gravity allowed to explain the observed movement of the planets, and to calculate, in advance, the movement of newly-discovered objects (e.g., comets), after observing their positions for a few consecutive nights.
