Grapefruit is very acidic, and could definitely strip the paint off of a car. Other things that are bad for the paint on a car are egg yolks and bologna.

Why do people who live near the sea have problems with rusting cars?

I used to work for a fleet of about 2,000 vehicles of all types. The garage was about 2 miles from the Pacific Ocean. It was my job to keep up the pool cars (cars not assigned to a section), of which there were about 100 cars and pickup trucks. If a car was ignored for more then 2 weeks the finish would get very rough, like fine sandpaper rough! That was because of the salt air so near the coast. You could fix the paint, with the clay bars you can buy, but that took hours and was rarely done. We had a car wash, which made things much easier, the problem was most of the other attendants would not bother with pool cars unless they were told to. I made a point to run them through the car wash every week or two, if I had time, and these cars finish were much better then the ones that were neglected (no sandpaper paint). The moral is, if you live near the coast, wash it every week and keep wax on the paint too. If you feel the paint getting rough, you can fix it by rubbing with the clay bars but it will not be easy. Also a car cover, if practical for you, would probably save a lot of work too.

Why can you see your reflection in a car after it has been washed and waxed?

It depends on the car. A2 A rough surface scatters reflected light in all directions, it is harder to make out an image. A polished surface evens out surface, so that reflected light behaves more like a mirror. The wax fits into the irregularities in the paint finish. Polishing then makes this flat. For a correct image to be seen, the surface must reflect the light, back the way it came, insted of at an angle.
