The Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) is a standardize test administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). It is used as a form of measure for applicants to graduate school. Computer-based GRE General Tests are separated into six separate sections analytical writing, two quantitative sections, two verbal sections, and an experimental section. Paper-based GRE exams also contain six sections, and are generally used when computer-based exams are not available.

Analytical Writing

The analytical writing section of the GRE exam consists of two essays. Basic word processing programs are used to write the essays, and do not contain any advanced features, such as spell check. Student essays are graded on a scale of 0 to 6, by at least two readers. Scores are averaged together if they are within a one-point difference. If scores differ more than one-point, a third reader is asked to examine and score the essay.

Quantitative

Basic high-school mathematical and reasoning skills are required for the two quantitative sections of the exam. This section is scored on a scale from 130 to 170. In standard GRE exams, each quantitative test section consists of a total of 20 questions that must be completed within a 35-minute time span. Each section includes eight quantitative comparisons, 3 data interpretation questions, and 9 problem-solving questions.

Verbal

Vocabulary usage, reading comprehension, and critical reasoning, are all important skills needed for the two verbal sections of the GRE exam. The verbal sections of the test are also scored on a scale from 130 to 170, and include a total of 20 questions that are to be completed within a 30-minute time span. Each section includes 4 sentence equivalence, 6 text completion, and 10 critical-reading questions.

Experimental

The experimental section of the GRE exam can be an analytical writing, quantitative, or verbal task. This section does not count towards the overall score of the exam, but is identical to the scored sections of the test. Test takers have no way of knowing which of the six sections is experimental. Therefore, they must try their hardest to pass each section. In some cases, an identified research section is provided as an alternative to the experimental section. Paper-based GRE exams do not contain experimental sections.

A Look at the Practice Gre?

Most students looking to enter post graduate studies in the US and some other English speaking countries will have to sit for the GRE (Graduate Record Examinations). It is a highly standardized test and the resultant score carries much weight in an applicant's pre-admissions file. Practice GRE tests are available to help students to prepare for the exam.Practice GRE StructureThese practice tests follow the same structure as the GRE test, which contains six sections. The first section will always test analytical writing skills. After that, there will be two verbal and two quantitative sections and one research or experimental one. There are educational companies and institutions which give practice exams. Their price range can range from free to hundreds of dollars.Practice GREs are also available online. A simple search of the term "practice GRE" will yield many results. Keep in mind that the GRE was changed in August 2011, especially in reference to weight in scoring of the different sections. Thus any test and subsequent scoring used should reflect these changes.Time AspectIt is important to remember when taking these tests that the sections are timed. They must be completed within a certain amount of time which corresponds to the actual exam. If taking the exam with an institution or school, there will more than likely be a test proctor who will administer the practice GRE exactly as the real one will be. However, doing it alone will require the student to do this him or herself.ResourcesThere are programs and websites that actually can help solo students with the time aspect of the exam. Some of them have videos with an actual test proctor administering the exam on screen. These resources will also help future test takers in practically every other aspect of preparing for the GRE.EffectivenessPractice Gre test scores can vary from actual test scores. That being so, actual GRE test scores rise amongst those students who have taken a practice GRE. Much of this can be explained by the fact that students who take practice exams get more comfortable with the test taking structure. Thus, they know what to expect and are prepared.

The Importance of Gre Testing?

The Graduate Record Exam (GRE) is a necessary requirement to become admitted to the majority of US, UK and Canadian graduate schools. These schools are attended by students who want to earn a Master's degree. Gre testing is also very helpful to be admitted to a PhD program. The Gre test measures the student's ability to answer questions in a timed manner. The test does not require knowledge in any one particular subject, but is an exam that will show the student's abilities in analytical, verbal and quantitative skills. Since the Gre testing is multiple choice, it can even be easier than many other tests because one answer may stand out more than the others as the correct one. Most schools that require Gre testing are vet schools, many other allied health professional schools, and graduate schools. It is said that the test is a good way to know the student's possible success in a graduate program. There are 17 specific areas in the Gre subject tests which include areas such as biology, chemistry and psychology. Anyone preparing to take the Gre general test should not study by any last minute cramming. It is possible to look at sample exams found at bookstores in the section of self-help books. The seven parts of a Gre test are two verbal sections, two analytical sections, two quantitative sections and one experimental section. The experimental part is not scored. Each question on the Gre test is worth the same amount of points regardless of how easy or difficult the question may be. The questions will start out easy and progress to the more difficult ones. In a timed test, it is better to guess an answer than to take too long to figure out the correct one. This should only be done on the very difficult questions. Never leave a questions unanswered. The scoring ranges from 200 to 800 with no one ever getting anything lower than 200. Even if one or two questions are wrong, an 800 score can still be achieved. It takes approximately six weeks after the date of the test to receive the scores in the mail.
