The Treaty of Tordesillas divided the newly discovered lands outside Europe between Portugal and Spain. Spain had the right to trade in the territories west of the line, while Portugal had the right to trade in the territories to the east. This agreement aimed to prevent conflicts between the two countries over newly discovered territories.

Spain and Portugal. Under the Treaty of Tordesillas (1494), the Spanish were granted the right to claim lands west of the line (most of the Americas) while the Portuguese could claim lands east of it (Brazil, colonies in India and Asia).

Both countries sought treasure in the New World and in the East Indies. Portugal was limited by the Treaty of Tordesillas (1494) which gave Spain the right to colonize most of the Americas. The exception was Brazil, the easternmost part of South America. Portugal, however, also conducted trade, conquest, and piracy in India by sailing around Africa.
