Thats a good question, but I'll have to answer as best i can. The majority of the foods they eat are meat. In fact, its the only food they really hae acsess to, as you can't farm in the steppe, and there certainly is no other vegetation than the grass on the ground. Thus, raising animals in a nomadic lifestyle in the only way to obtain your own food. In past times, however, I beleive it was common for steppe peoples in Mongolia and other places to do yearly raids on Chinese and other villages for grain and foods other than meat to supplement their diet.
The steppe between the Ural Mountains and the Aral Sea is known as the West Siberian Plain. It is a vast expanse of flat grassland with some marshes, lakes, and rivers. Farming is not the main occupation of people living in the steppe. While some farming activities may take place in certain areas of the steppe, pastoralism (raising livestock) is typically a more common occupation due to the dry and arid conditions of the steppe environment. Additionally, hunting and gathering may also be practiced by some groups living in the steppe.
There are two type of steppes:- An alpine-steppeis a high altitude natural grassland which receives very little rainfall. Extremely cold temperatures and sparse vegetation make the Central Tibetan Plateau Alpine Steppe ecoregion inhospitable to human communities. Not only are there no farmers in this region, but there also aren't any nomadic herders such as those found in other parts of the Tibetan plateau. Instead, this dry alpine region provides lots of undisturbed and safe habitat for great herds of wild Tibetan antelopes (chirus), blue sheep, Tibetan gazelles, and other grazing species, as well as the predators that feed on them. The Tibetan Plateau , also known as the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau is a vast, elevated plateau in Central Asia covering most of the Tibet Autonomous Region and Qinghai Province in China and Ladakh in Kashmir, India is one example of an alpine steppe. On an average, 25 to 50 mm of rains per year.Shrub-steppe is a type of low rainfall natural grassland sedge and rush families can also be found here. Shrub-steppes are distinguishable from deserts, which are too dry to support a noticeable cover of perennial grasses or other shrubs, while the shrub-steppe has sufficient moisture levels to support a cover of perennial grasses or shrubs. Rainfall is less than 7 inch per year
Desert climate is like the steppe climate except that the steppe has more rainfall. There is also some grass in the steppe.
